For many Auckland is a must to see the wild New Zealand, for others it is simply the financial center of a country of less than 5 million inhabitants. Those who know her well know that this city of court cosmopolitan and Asian influence has small things you can get to dazzle. We have traveled several times to New Zealand and the first time we landed there we had the question of what to see in Auckland, since it has neither great monuments nor imposing skyscrapers, well maybe some, things that are normally sought when visiting the capital of a country.

By the way, the true capital of the country is Wellington, on the same island but further south.

An introduction to Auckland

Auckland looks like a city flooded with American-style chalets with the exception of the city center, dominated mainly by business centers, theaters and small shopping centers. We cannot say that it is a bustling city, we did not see too many people on the street, but it does look very cosmopolitan. There are many people of Chinese and Polynesian origin, and workers come from other countries to work in their "skyscrapers."

From Auckland we can highlight one thing, to be Anglo-Saxon we can say that there are more bars and restaurants than shops. It can be eaten everybody's food, although Asian food predominates, mainly Japanese, Thai and Chinese.

The churches The city is poor in appearance and the few worthwhile buildings in Auckland are scattered among moles of concrete. I can't say it's a beautiful city, but thanks to the bay and its surroundings the city earns a lot of integers. No wonder that Kiwis prefer to live outside the center in a beautiful wooden house surrounded by green meadows. They do know what the quality of life is.

What to do and what to see in Auckland

How we said Auckland is not a city that stands out for its monuments, but it does have several things that are worth visiting or doing. At least one day for things to see in Auckland, perfect, but don't expect big things. Just let yourself be carried away by its people, its restaurants or by a simple walk through the streets that end up in the bay. It's another New Zealand, but a New Zealand that you have to know.

Have a drink or jump in the Sky Tower

Our first goal in Auckland was to visit its most characteristic icon. We had left the motorhome and we were already one day to return to Spain, so it was a small tribute. Have a good wine in the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the city.

As in all of New Zealand, Auckland can not be less, since in the Sky Tower itself it is possible to do activities where adrenaline is its greatest exponent, since while you see the views or have a drink it is possible to make or see how people he throws himself jumping on the streets of Auckland. One last!.

Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph Cathedral

As a cathedral it does not attract attention, but of course, you cannot ask for a lot of history and beautiful churches from a country that has been very far from “civilization” for a long time. St. Patrick's Cathedral dates from 1907 and is one of the most visited Catholic buildings in the city. Call attention to being under the skyscrapers and the Sky Tower.

Auckland Art Gallery

It is possibly the most important museum in the country. Exhibits local art and international paintings, with some Picasso and Matisse. There are free visits every day.

Stroll through Queen St

Although many of the main streets are very similar, Queen st is probably the one with the most stores and restaurants. In addition, it ends at the port, making it a pleasant walk for some last shopping or to go to dinner in Auckland.

How to get to New Zealand?

Depending on the time of the year one or another company may be worth more or less. Most of the people fly via Qatar or Dubai, but the reality is that there are flights with Chinese companies making stops that reduce the cost of flying to New Zealand. In any case, flying to Auckland is almost always around € 1,000 round trip.

Where to sleep?

We chose to sleep in hotel both on arrival and departure from New Zealand. We stayed in a small hotel, cheaper than average, but with good qualities. This hotel was the Kiwi International Hostel.
