A magnificent excursion from Madrid or from Toledo is to visit the Montalbán Castle, a castle that rises in a vertiginous hill next to the torcón river. Susmurallas are imposing and the impressive pointed arch of the entrance are part of the beauty of this spectacular fortress.
A little history
As you can see in the video (recorded with a drone) of the Montalbán Castle, it is clearly perceived that its location is to give it the sense of strength, protected by the river and by great cut that protects it. Before there was the current castle there was, as is often the case in our history, a arabic castle. It is believed that it was built by the Templars in the 13th century.
Like other fortresses of the time this one too suffered attacks and was besieged for months. Today you can still see the remains of the previous muslim fortress, fall with the reconquest of Toledo, but today what we can admire is especially its excellent state of conservation of elements such as its albarrana towers, the pointed arch and the walls.
Our getaway from Madrid
Just as we did an excursion to the Burujón Canyon in Toledo, the Montalbán Castle could not be less. This castle had been recommended to us, so we left early in Madrid on a Sunday to see a fortress that already caught our attention after seeing several photographs on the Internet.
Already near the castle, we leave behind the road towards Puebla de Montalbán to take a dirt road to a fence that prevents us from approaching the castle by car. On the fence we could read that they are made Guided visits, something worthwhile for the whole story that contains a place like this.
Pointed arch of the Montalbán Castle
After about 5 or 10 minutes walking you reach the castle doors, located in an imposing place and with magnificent views. It gives a feeling of loneliness and even tremendous abandonment, since it is in the middle of nowhere and without apparent signs of tourist exploitation. It is as if it were a castle lost in the bush ...
The interior is kept in good condition. It is easy to climb up the wall by perfectly preserved stairs. We were also able to access the checkpoints or in the Albarranas towers. The reality is that for an hour we could walk between its walls and go through a small green meadow that is inside. our conclusion, a different castle, a castle worth knowing.
